Glorious Goodwood Day 4 Tips
Glorious Goodwood is a highlight of both the sporting and social calendars. The pageantry and style ranks it alongside any of the summer’s fashion and racing events and the five days will be savoured by all.
The meeting continues onto its fourth day on Friday, 4th August and features the Group 2 King George Qatar Stakes. The race is a 5f sprint won by the lightning quick Battaash in recent years, with the straight track at Goodwood being among the fastest in the country.

Goodwood Day 4 Races On Tuesday
Glorious Goodwood’s Day 4 card features the Group 2 King George Qatar Stakes, one of the top sprint prizes below the top tier of the entire flat season. There are also a pair of Group 3s on the day, namely the Bonhams Thoroughbred Stakes, won in 2021 by the superstar Baaeed, and the Glorious Stakes, a middle distance race for four-year-olds and upwards.
Coral Goodwood Handicap @13:50
The fourth day of Glorious Goodwood opens with a competitive staying handicap, run over 2m4½f. At that trip, it is the longest handicap of the season in terms of distance. Indeed, it is so long, that horses start without stalls and by running in the opposite direction up Goodwood’s straight before looping back round in the traditional orientation. It attracted 14 runners in 2022 and was won by the smart performer Master Milliner. In behind were a number of dual-purpose horses who regularly contest National Hunt races as well.
Bonhams Thoroughbred Stakes @14:25
The first of the Group contests on the day is the Group 3 Bonhams Thoroughbred Stakes. It is run over 1m and is restricted only to three-year-olds. Though some useful performers had won the race in the recent past, the race received a real boost in 2021 when William Haggas’ Baaeed took the race in splendid style. The German-trained Rocchigiani (now Flaming Rabbit) caused a minor upset when winning last year at 11/2.
Unibet Golden Mile Handicap @15:00
The Golden Mile Handicap is one of the top races of its kind over the season. Run over the distance stated in its name, it takes in the famous undulating bend at the top of Goodwood’s straight, ensuring that track position is absolutely vital. This race regularly provides a follow-up for horses who ran in Royal Ascot’s Royal Hunt Cup and was claimed last year by Orbaan for trainer David O’Meara, giving him his second win in the race in three years. Look out for Ryan Moore in this race too: the top rider won this in three successive years between 2016-18, but all three were for different trainers.
King George Qatar Stakes @ 15:35
The highlight of the day often goes by in the blink of an eye, both because of the excitement of the build-up and the nature of the race. Run over the minimum trip of 5f, the Group 2 King George Stakes is among the fastest races run in Britain every season due to the generally downhill nature of Goodwood’s straight track. There is an uphill finish to contend with, but horses who show blistering speed early are regularly favoured. As such, the great Battaash was able to win this on four occasions due to his sensational maintenance of pace from the break. Last year saw Battaash’s trainer Charles Hill win again as his runner Khaadem edged out Raasel in a thrilling finish.
L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate Glorious Stakes @16:10
Another Group race swiftly follows the highlight of the day as the Glorious Stakes is a Group 3 for older horses. It is run over the Derby distance of 1m4f, suiting experienced middle distance horses perfectly. Godolphin’s Rebel’s Romance was the hero in it last year, landing the owners a second successive victory in the race after Passion And Glory won in 2021.
Ire-Incentive It Pays To Buy Irish Nursery Handicap @16:45
This nursery, a handicap for juveniles, is run over 6f and often attracts a field of hopefuls looking to make the jump up to Graded company. Last years winner Rumstar is an example of that, having gone on to win the Group 3 Cornwallis Stakes later that season.
Coral Handicap @ 17:20
Day 4 concludes with a handicap for three-year-olds. The rather unique trip of 1m3f is the distance and is a 0-90, ensuring slightly lower-rated horses get to shine on one of the biggest stages of the season. Group 1 winners Poet’s Word and Walton Street took this in back-to-back years in 2016 and 2017. The race tends to go to one of the more prominent runners in the betting, as eight of the last ten renewals have been won by horses priced 6/1 or shorter.
