Goodwood Day 5 Races On Saturday

Glorious Goodwood’s day 5 card centres on the Steward’s Cup, a 2m Group 1 which one of the season’s most exciting and competitive betting heats. This year’s renewal promises the same excitement as year’s gone by with a mix of talented top weight and potentially well in types lurking near the bottom of the handicap. Day 5 also features the Group 2 Lilly Langtry Stakes worth £300,000 in prize money.

Coral Stewards’ Sprint Handicap @ 13:50 

The Coral Steward’s Sprint Handicap is the consolation race for the Stewards’ Cup later on the card. Over the same distance of six furlongs it will feature horses who didn’t make it into that race or not yet at that level. However, many of these will have their sites on the Stewards’ Cup later in the career – 2021 winner of this race Mr Wagyu contested the bigger race in 2022 and is in there again this year. That’s not always the case though, as last year’s winner of this, Many A Star, is set to defend his crown in this again this year.

Coral Summer Handicap @ 14:25

The Coral Summer Handicap is a hugely valuable, and therefore competitive affair on the final day of Glorious Goodwood. Worth a whopping £100,000 this 1m6f contest is usually hugely competitive which will test both the class and stamina of the field. The race is open to three-year-olds and above.

Qatar Lillie Langtry Stakes @ 15.00 

The Qatar Lillie Langtry Stakes is an extremely prestigious Group 2 contest on Day 5 of Glorious Goodwood which was first run in 2003. The race is open to fillies and mares and contested over 1 mile 6 furlongs. This race has seen some classy previous winners including Group 1 winners Wonderful Tonight and Simple Verse.

Coral Stewards’ Cup @ 15:35

The feature race on Day 5 of Glorious Goodwood which is always a competitive and enthralling event. One of the flat season’s biggest betting events and most prestigious handicaps, which sees a maximum field of 28 blitz their way on the Downs over 6 furlongs. Charles Hills’ impressive colt Orazio is the current favourite.

Racing Welfare Handicap @ 16:10 

The Racing Welfare Handicap is for horses three-year-old horses rated between 86-105, worth £35,000 over 7 furlongs. This Class 2 event has a maximum of 20 runners and often throws up a surprise result – there have been four double-figure odds winners of the race in the last ten years, including last year’s 18/1 winner I’m A Gambler.

British EBF 40th Anniversary Maiden @ 16:45

Glorious Goodwood Day 5 penultimate race is the British European Breeders’ Fund EBF Maiden. This 7f contest is for two-year-old colts and geldings only who have yet to win a race under rules. This tricky contest is worth £30,000 which is good prize money for the level and should see a future prospect winning. Many of these runners will be late bloomers, having their first or second run of the season.

Coral Handicap @ 17:20 

The Coral Handicap finishes of Glorious Goodwood 2023 on Day 5. The finale is for three-year-olds and older and runs at a distance of just over 1 mile. This Class 3 contest is work £30,000 and is always a tricky affair to predict with runners rated 76-95 so are nicely congested in ability.


Goodwood Day 5 Betting Tips

There are many factors that punters should consider before placing any bets at Glorious Goodwood 2023. The ground is generally considered to be an important factor and how a horse has previously handled a slow or fast surface should provide a good insight into how they’ll run at Goodwood.
