Thunder Max 4 days
J: Paula Muir
T: Jessica Bedi
Form: 674-60
OR: 65
W: 9st 9lb
Age: 5 yo Colt
0-13 since his successful racecourse debut and although he ran well when fourth of ten on stable debut here (1m) in December, he has failed to beat a rival in both starts since; plenty to prove.
Gold Aura 21 days
J: Dylan Hogan
T: Jack Jones
Form: 3432-4
OR: 65
W: 9st 9lb
Age: 4 yo Filly
Starting to look exposed despite having made the frame in eight of her nine starts; steps back up in trip returned to a handicap and a first-time hood now replaces cheekpieces; another placing may still be her best hope, though.
Sparkle In His Eye 14 days
Form: 513-05 C
OR: 63
W: 9st 7lb
Age: 8 yo Gelding
Knows how to win, being 5-19 on the AW and 7-35 overall; usually seen over shorter these days, but did win over 9.5f on the AW in France as a 3yo when trained by William Haggas; one for the shortlist.
Rise Hall 20 days
Form: 750-44 D
OR: 63
W: 9st 7lb
Age: 9 yo Gelding
Losing run up to 16, but havng tumbled down the weights his last two efforts have been encouraging, including when fourth of eight in a slightly better contest over C&D last time (third has won since); down another 1lb and high on the list.
Showmedemoney 17 days
Form: 887-66 CD
OR: 63
W: 9st 7lb
Age: 5 yo Gelding
Not at his best lately, though his latest start was in a 0-80 and he is 2-2 in Class 6 handicaps; usually seen over shorter, but he did win over just shy of this trip at Ripon (good) last May; interesting.
Busby 66 days
J: Rowan Scott
T: Philip Kirby
Form: 93009-
OR: 62
W: 9st 6lb
Age: 9 yo Gelding
10-48 on the AW and 4lb lower than for the latest of two wins at Wolverhampton (9.5f, Tapeta) at the end of 2022; has failed to beat a rival in his last two starts (found to have an irregular heartbeat last time) so a leap of faith is required.
Elusive Truth 20 days
J: Clifford Lee
T: Gemma Tutty
Form: 66/6-8
OR: 62
W: 9st 6lb
Age: 4 yo Filly
Out of the frame in all four starts, including twice for this yard after returning from 438 days off in December; best watched unless market indicates otherwise.
Masterpainter 17 days
J: Phil Dennis
T: Michael Dods
Form: 6366-3
OR: 60
W: 9st 4lb
Age: 4 yo Gelding
0-8 in handicaps since making a successful nursery debut at Thirsk (1m good) in September 2022, but there have been encouraging signs since switched to the AW as when third of 11 here (1m) last month; pedigree suggests he is well worth another go over this far; respected down another 1lb.
Explorers Way 22 days
Form: 680-41 CD
OR: 59
W: 9st 3lb
Age: 5 yo Colt
All three wins have come here and he proved he didn't need headgear when recording a game success over this trip last time; only 2lb higher and no reason why he shouldn't go well again.
Lochnaver 24 days
J: Luke Morris
T: Jim Goldie
Form: 6210-7 CD
OR: 52
W: 8st 10lb
Age: 6 yo Filly
Not at her best over longer trips the last twice (does stay further than this), but is back off the same mark as when successful over C&D in November; not the biggest surprise should she bounce back.

Betting Forecast
20/1 Thunder Max, 11/2 Gold Aura, 12/1 Sparkle In His Eye, 4/1 Rise Hall, 12/1 Showmedemoney, 20/1 Busby, 20/1 Elusive Truth, 11/2 Masterpainter, 7/4 Explorers Way, 11/1 Lochnaver
Verdict
C&D winners Explorers Way and Lochnaver cannot be dismissed easily and neither can Sparkle In His Eye, given that he knows how to get his head in front. Rise Hall has been shaping as though he might be returning to winning form lately, but preference is for MASTERPAINTER who has shown some encouraging signs since switched to the AW. His pedigree suggests he is well worth another go over this longer trip. Showmedemoney is another worth a second look.[David Bellingham]
