Form: 61764- D

OR: 87

W: 9st 11lb

Age: 5 yo Colt

Form

Three 1m2f wins last year, including under Archie Young; creditable fourth off 1lb higher on AW when last seen in November; has gone close over C&D before; likely to be competitive if ready to roll after five months off.

Form: 34102- CD

OR: 85

W: 9st 9lb

Age: 7 yo Filly

Form

Multiple Flat winner, including here; good second of 14 at York (extended 1m2f, soft) when last seen on the Flat in October; failed to make a significant impact in two handicap hurdles over the winter and now returns to the level after just over three months off.

Form: 9950-2 D

OR: 84

W: 9st 8lb

Age: 7 yo Gelding

Form

Well handicapped on the pick of his form and made a good return to action when second to next-time-out winner Midnight Lion at Newcastle (1m2f, AW) four weeks ago; given a chance to build on that promise.

Wintercrack

Form: 20019- DBF

OR: 83

W: 9st 7lb

Age: 5 yo Filly

Form

Added to her good record on soft/heavy ground (including second in this race last year) when comfortably making all at Nottingham (1m2f) last autumn; reported to have travelled poorly to the racecourse when tailed off final start; successful on last year's reappearance but conditions are unlikely to be testing as she wants them this time.

Financer

Form: 58015- D

OR: 82

W: 9st 6lb

Age: 4 yo Colt

Form

Three 1m2f wins on good/good to firm last season, the final one off only 1lb lower at Ayr in September; respectable fifth (Yorkshire Lady second) at York (soft) on final start; much depends on whether he's fully primed after six months off.

Form: 5026-0 D

OR: 82

W: 9st 6lb

Age: 5 yo Colt

Form

No win since October 2022 but he's often run well in defeat and was runner-up three times last season; behind a couple of today's rivals when well held on Doncaster reappearance 18 days ago but he did meet some trouble; visor refitted.

Form: 6494-6 CD

OR: 81

W: 9st 5lb

Age: 9 yo Gelding

Form

9yo with only one win (last May) in nearly three years now but he's 2lb below that last winning mark and his Doncaster reappearance wasn't devoid of promise, keeping on from the rear for sixth of 16 in a warm race; needs things to drop right but this former C&D scorer has to enter the reckoning.

Form: 32013- CD

OR: 81

W: 9st 5lb

Age: 6 yo Gelding

Form

Good Ripon record includes two wins over this trip on good ground in 2024; also went close on the 1m apprentice handicap on this card on last year's reappearance; considered.

Form: 13965- D

OR: 80

W: 9st 4lb

Age: 5 yo Colt

Form

Successful off 1lb higher at Newbury (1m2f, good) for Sir Michael Stoute on 2024 reappearance; that's his sole win from eight starts but there's been promise on other occasions and he starts out for his new yard (same owner) as a low-mileage 5yo.

Form: 4706-7 CD

OR: 77

W: 9st 1lb

Age: 10 yo Gelding

Form

Three C&D wins, including this race in 2023; now a 10yo but still a force last season (won off 2lb higher) and reappearance seventh (Baryshnikov sixth) of 16 at Doncaster suggests plenty of ability remains.

Verdict

In an open-looking handicap LORD PROTECTOR is given a chance to build on a promising reappearance second behind a subsequent winner at Newcastle last month. Ripon specialist Ey Up Its The Boss is capable fresh and is second choice ahead of Baryshnikov and Cockalorum (a former winner of this race) who both shaped reasonably well in a competitive Doncaster handicap on reappearance.
