Form & Verdict

His best effort last season came when pouncing late in a C&D handicap last September; made a winning reappearance at Beverley in April (5f, soft) and while he's been unable to add to that success, he's regularly hinted at better; last two starts (good to firm) especially suggest he has what it takes to win a race like this, away from the main action at York and then considerably better than the result in the Stewards' Cup where he travelled with purpose from a tough draw before running into traffic issues; the stable runs four but he's the mount of Oisin Orr and looks to have plenty in his favour.

He had been bubbling away nicely prior to enjoying his finest hour in last week's Great St Wilfrid at Ripon (6f, good), digging deep to hold off a smart stablemate; 6lb rise takes him into new territory but he ran well over C&D last month and there could be more improvement lurking.

Tough handicapper who is 2lb lower than when pipped in the Victoria Cup in May; another fine effort when eighth in the Stewards' Cup at Goodwood two weeks ago, not ideally drawn as things panned out; has a big sprint handicap in him but Ayr next month might prove a better fit; visor left off once again; one of four runners for Richard Fahey.

Tough handicapper who was pipped at the post by Significantly here 12 months ago; better than ever when again collared in the shadow of the post in the Victoria Cup in May; found stablemate Dare To Hope just too strong in the Great St Wilfrid five weeks ago, doing best of the smaller far-side group; the 3lb rise for that effort could just scupper him but he looks rock solid to run well.

Having his fourth run in this race and the gods haven't shone on him in earlier efforts, first home on his side in both 2019 (second) and 2022 (fourth) before only just failing to peg back the winner 12 months ago; his Bunbury Cup third last month came off a 4lb higher mark and this isn't as demanding as his last two assignments; he'd be a worthy winner but there's a suspicion the line will be coming to soon once again.

Only 2lb higher than for his third in this race 12 months ago, a run that was followed by an impressive win in the Ayr Silver Cup; better than ever when scoring at Thirsk in May (6f, good to soft) and his latest Goodwood run (7f, good to firm) suggested he was still in top form; the ground would be slower than good in an ideal world for him, but he can't be discounted.

Won two AW events as a 2yo (5f/6f); pulled too hard on his nursery debut when last seen nine months ago; mighty task trying to concede experience and race fitness in a handicap of this magnitude on his return.

A dual 5f AW scorer at two but he's cut little ice in two turf runs this summer, beating only one at York (5f) 22 days ago; he needs to take a big step forward.

Maiden/novice wins at Newcastle (6f/5f, AW) last autumn before substandard handicap debut at Wolverhampton (6f, AW); pulled hard, then absent until Ripon (6f, good) three weeks ago when he may have needed the run, but he was well beaten and it's hard to be confident on the back of that.

Form & Verdict

Two C&D wins early in his career; retains ability as a 9yo and he has the stands' rail to help him this afternoon; feasible mark but this race might be asking too much of him.

Over two years since the last of his 15 wins and he's on a retrieval mission after a series of modest efforts since August; this is a marked drop in class for him though and a revival wouldn't be a total shock.

Winner of a big 6f handicap on soft but nearly all of his 15 wins have come on good or quicker; under the handicapper's thumb this year but he's been dropped 3lb for a respectable run in the Ayr Silver Cup last Saturday and he does have a good record here, 2-4 in C&D handicaps.

Another old faithful of the sprint division; has yet to run poorly here and hasn't been far away in each of the last three runnings of the Gold Cup (third in 2021); on a losing run of more than two years though and unfortunately has run enough good races in 2024 to keep him high in the weights.
